Conferences

  • Bouchercon. This is one of the longest running annual mystery conferences, begun in 1970, and held in a different city each year.
  • Left Coast Crime. The March 2009 conference is being held in Hawaii on the Big Island. Members of the Hawaii chapter of Sisters in Crime will be participating.
  • Love Is Murder. This conference covers mysteries, thrillers, romantic suspense, and dark fiction for readers, writers, and publishers.
  • Malice Domestic. Fans of traditional mysteries, typified by the works of Agatha Christie, have been gathering in metropolitan Washington, D.C., since 1989.
  • Maui Writers' Conference. This conference, held annually over Labor Day weekend for writers, publishers, and agents, moved to Oahu (Honolulu) beginning in 2008. Writers can also participate in an intensive writers' retreat held the week prior to the conference.
  • Sisters in Crime Schedule of Events/Conferences/Trade Shows. The national organization maintains a list of events of interest to both readers and writers.

  • Crimespree Magazine. This site provides a blog for discussing the magazine's contents.
  • Mystery Scene Magazine. This site provides book reviews and a blog to enter your own comments.
  • Mystery Writers of America. This site, for writers, aspiring writers, readers, and fans, provides book recommendations, a blog, lists of events and contests, and access to author blogs.
  • Sisters in Crime Books in Print. Locate books written by Sisters in Crime members.
  • The Mystery Place. This site provides access to the leading short fiction mystery magazines, including the Alfred Hitchcock Mystery Magazine and the Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine. It includes a Readers' Forum for online discussions.

Writing and Publishing

  • Crime Scene Writer. This Yahoo group brings together writers and technical experts to answer questions about investigating crimes. You need to sign up for the group before participating.
  • Crime Scene Investigation & Police Procedures. Retired policeman Lee Lofland provides a wealth of information about investigating crimes.
  • Evil Editor. This blog provides advice and writing exercises for beginning writers.
  • International Thriller Writers. This site provides a schedule of writer events, plus other services for its members.
  • Mystery Writers of America. This site, for writers, aspiring writers, readers, and fans, provides book recommendations, a blog, lists of events and contests, and access to author blogs.
  • Poets & Writers. This site provides tools for writers, including networking.
  • Publishers Lunch and Publishers Marketplace. This site provides current news about the publishing industry. It requires a subscription.
  • Publishers Weekly. This site provides news about the publishing industry, book reviews, and information about author tours.
  • Sisters in Crime Guppies. This group is for aspiring mystery writers. You must belong to Sisters in Crime to join.
  • The Writer. This site provides advice for writers, as well as a database of pulications, publishers, and agents (requires a subscription for access).
  • Writer's Digest. This site provides advice on writing and publishing.
